Cellular Backhauling
Free Space Optics, also known as FSO, or Optical Wireless technology is increasingly used by service providers as a rapid-rollout, instant infrastructure to meet massive growth in user numbers and the demands of new-generation high-bandwidth wireless applications. By using advanced wireless laser technology, modern FSO vendors offer point-to-point bandwidths exceeding 2.5Gbps over distances up to a few kilometers.
Mobile Carriers pressed for bandwidth and network upgrades are turning to high-speed Optical Wireless solutions. The point-to-point solutions are deployed to replace low-bandwidth single E1/T1 leased lines and licensed RF solutions that require licensing and regulatory processes. The Optical Wireless solutions provide Mobile Carriers with greater control and flexibility of networks, without the recurring costs of leased E1/T1 lines from a Telco intermediary. Mobile Carriers can deploy up to 16xE1/T1 or more of capacity without changing a single Optical Wireless link-head or paying a Telco intermediary. Optical Wireless solutions are license-free and immune to spectrum saturation found in dense metro areas and rapidly growing international cities where licensed RF competes for airwaves.

Advantages for deployment in GSM networks
• Requires no frequency license (unlike radio/microwave)
• No risk of interference
• Rapid installation (3 hours typically)
• Bandwidths upgradeable from 1 to 622Mbps and beyond
• Reliable range performance up to 4km (dependant on region)
• Rugged design for harsh climates, with laser cooling for longevity
• Easy re-deployment without frequency planning issues
• Temporary deployment to cover special events e.g. sports, VIP, trade shows
